Authentic Greek Baklava

A Crisp, Nutty, and Syrupy Slice of the Mediterranean

Introduction

Greek Baklava is more than a dessert—it’s an experience. This golden pastry layers paper-thin phyllo dough with spiced nuts, then drenches everything in a warm honey-lemon syrup that soaks through every crevice. It’s sweet, crunchy, and fragrant, and each bite tells a story of tradition, celebration, and indulgence.

If you’ve never made it at home, don’t worry—we’re walking you through every crispy step. Once you do, you’ll skip the bakery forever.

Why I Love This Recipe

✅ Crisp, buttery layers that shatter in your mouth
✅ Warm, spiced nut filling with cinnamon and cloves
✅ Soaked in honey-lemon syrup for flavor-packed sweetness
✅ Surprisingly easy to make and perfect for gifting
✅ Keeps fresh for up to 2 weeks—no refrigeration required

🛒 Ingredients

For the Baklava:

  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough, thawed overnight in the fridge
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cloves (optional)

For the Honey Syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup honey (Greek thyme honey is ideal)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp lemon zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prep & Layer the Phyllo

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Unroll the phyllo and keep it covered with a damp towel.
  • Layer 8 sheets into the pan, brushing each with butter.

2️⃣ Add the Nut Filling

  • Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon (and cloves, if using).
  • Sprinkle a thin layer of nuts over the phyllo.
  • Top with 2 buttered phyllo sheets.
  • Repeat layering: nuts → 2 phyllo sheets → nuts, for 4–5 cycles.
  • Finish with 6–8 buttered phyllo sheets on top.

3️⃣ Score & Bake

  • Cut into diamonds or squares with a sharp knife.
  • Bake for 45–50 minutes, until golden and crisp.

4️⃣ Make the Syrup

  • In a saucepan, simmer water + sugar for 10 minutes.
  • Stir in honey, vanilla, lemon zest, and cinnamon stick.
  • Simmer for 10 more minutes, then strain.

5️⃣ Soak the Baklava

  • Immediately pour hot syrup over the hot baklava (listen for the sizzle!).
  • Let cool completely for at least 4 hours to soak and set.

💡 Pro Tips for Perfect Baklava

  • Keep phyllo covered—it dries quickly.
  • Butter every sheet generously to ensure crisp layers.
  • Let it rest overnight for the best flavor infusion.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut clean layers.
  • Don’t cover tightly for storage—loose foil or a cake dome helps it stay crisp.

🍽️ What to Serve With

Pair your baklava with something cool or creamy:

  • Blueberry Lemonade – vibrant, citrusy, and refreshing
  • Grasshopper Pie – mint-chocolate contrast to the syrupy richness
  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Bites – mini bites for dessert boards
  • Edible Cookie Dough – for a no-bake indulgence
  • Caramel Apple Pie Cookies – another sweet, bite-sized favorite

🧊 Storage Tips

  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks
  • Use parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent sticking
  • Avoid refrigeration—it makes the phyllo soggy
  • Best enjoyed at room temp or slightly warm

More Desserts You’ll Love

  • Caramel Apple Pie Cookies
  • Grasshopper Pie
  • Edible Cookie Dough

Final Thoughts

Making Greek Baklava at home is not only rewarding but surprisingly simple once you get the hang of the layering. The combination of crisp pastry, warm spiced nuts, and that luxurious honey syrup makes this dessert unforgettable.

Perfect for holidays, celebrations, or just treating yourself—baklava is always a good idea. Let it rest, slice it fresh, and enjoy every syrupy, crunchy bite.
