Yu Shang Food Recalls Ready-to-Eat Meat Products Over Listeria Contamination
Public Health Warning
Yu Shang Food, Inc. has announced the recall of approximately 72,240 pounds of ready-to-eat pork, poultry, and beef products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This recall follows an outbreak linked to the products that has resulted in nine hospitalizations and one fatality across four states. The affected items were distributed nationwide and may still be in consumers’ freezers.
Details of the Recall
The recalled products include a variety of packaged and processed ready-to-eat meat and poultry items. They were produced before October 28, 2024, and bear the establishment numbers “P-46684” or “EST. M46684” printed on their packaging. These products were sold at retail stores, distributed to restaurants, and used in institutional settings such as schools and hospitals.
Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations. It can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection with symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. Pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at heightened risk, with potential complications including miscarriage or stillbirth.
What to Do If You Have These Products
Consumers are urged to take the following precautions:
- Check Labels: Inspect all packaged meat and poultry for the establishment numbers “P-46684” or “EST. M46684.”
- Dispose or Return: Do not consume the product. Either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
- Sanitize Surfaces: Clean any surfaces, cutting boards, or utensils that may have come into contact with the recalled products.
If you suspect illness after consuming these products, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
Ongoing Investigation and Industry Impacts
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is conducting an investigation to determine the source of contamination. Yu Shang Food has expressed its commitment to cooperating fully with authorities to address the issue and prevent future occurrences.
The recall has reignited discussions about the need for stricter regulatory oversight in the processing and packaging of ready-to-eat meat products. Listeria contamination often stems from lapses in sanitation during manufacturing or improper storage practices.
Steps to Prevent Listeria Contamination
While food recalls help mitigate immediate health risks, consumers can take steps to protect themselves from Listeria in general:
- Store Food Properly: Keep refrigerated items at or below 40°F and frozen items at 0°F.
- Cook Thoroughly: Ensure all meat products are cooked to their recommended internal temperatures.
- Clean Regularly: Maintain strict hygiene in food preparation areas, especially when handling raw or ready-to-eat items.
