This Easy Fruit-and-Veggie Jam Is My Favorite Guilt-Free Breakfast Spread

There’s something incredibly satisfying about making your own jam. It fills your kitchen with warm citrusy aromas, gives you full control over the ingredients, and somehow tastes better than anything from the store. What really won me over, though, was learning how to make jam without any added sugar. This Orange and Carrot Jam has become one of my favorites, not just because it’s naturally sweet and flavorful, but because it’s simple, healthy, and surprisingly versatile.

With just a couple of oranges, a carrot, a splash of lemon juice, and (optionally) a little apple for natural pectin, this jam delivers bright, fruity flavor with no refined sugar whatsoever. Whether I spread it on toast, spoon it into yogurt, or swirl it into oatmeal, it gives me all the jammy goodness I crave—without the sugar crash.

Here’s how I make it, step-by-step, along with some of my favorite ways to tweak it and enjoy it.

Why I Love This No-Sugar Jam

I was initially skeptical—how can you make a good jam without any sugar? But this combo of oranges, carrots, and lemon juice proved me wrong. Here’s why this recipe works so well:

  • The natural sweetness is enough: Oranges and carrots are both sweet on their own, and a touch of apple takes it even further.
  • You control everything: No preservatives, no added sugar, no mystery ingredients.
  • It’s as healthy as it is delicious: Packed with fiber, vitamins, and real fruit.
  • It’s versatile: I use it on more than just toast—more on that below.

Ingredients You’ll Need

(Makes about 1–1½ cups | Prep Time: 10 mins | Cook Time: 45–55 mins)

  • 2 medium oranges (peeled, seeds removed)
  • 1 medium carrot (peeled and grated or chopped)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 small apple, chopped (optional, for extra sweetness and natural pectin)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

How I Make Orange and Carrot Jam Without Sugar

1. Prep the Ingredients

I start by washing and peeling the oranges, making sure to remove any seeds and as much of the white pith as possible—it can be a little bitter. I cut the fruit into small pieces.

For the carrot, I either grate it finely or chop it into small bits. If I’m using an apple (which I usually do), I peel and chop it as well. The apple helps thicken the jam naturally while adding gentle sweetness.

2. Simmer Everything Together

In a medium saucepan, I combine the orange pieces, grated carrot, lemon juice, and chopped apple (if using). I pour in about 1/2 cup of water and add the cinnamon if I’m going that route.

I bring everything to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to keep it from sticking. The fruit breaks down and the mixture softens over 30–40 minutes.

3. Blend for a Smooth Jam

Once everything is soft and bubbling, I use an immersion blender to puree the mixture right in the pot. You can also transfer it to a food processor or blender if you prefer. I blend until it’s mostly smooth but still a little textured—just how I like it.

4. Simmer to Thicken

After blending, I return the mixture to low heat and cook it for another 10–15 minutes, stirring often. It thickens up as the moisture evaporates. If you like a firmer jam, cook it a little longer; for a looser consistency, pull it off the heat sooner.

5. Jar It While Hot

While the jam is still hot, I spoon it into sterilized glass jars. I seal them immediately to create a vacuum effect, which helps preserve the jam naturally.

Tips for the Best Sugar-Free Jam

  • Use ripe fruit: The riper the oranges, the sweeter and more flavorful your jam will be.
  • Sterilize your jars: I boil mine in water for 10 minutes before filling them. This helps the jam last longer.
  • Taste before jarring: If it’s too tart for your taste, try adding a bit more apple next time or let it reduce further to concentrate the sweetness.
  • Add spices carefully: Cinnamon adds warmth, but a little fresh ginger or nutmeg can totally transform the flavor profile.

How I Use This Jam

This jam has quickly become a staple in my kitchen. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

  • On toast or English muffins: Classic and always delicious.
  • Swirled into oatmeal: It melts right in and adds a burst of flavor.
  • As a yogurt topping: Adds natural sweetness to plain Greek yogurt.
  • On pancakes or waffles: A healthier alternative to syrup.
  • In baked goods: I’ve used it as a filling for thumbprint cookies and it worked beautifully.

FAQs From My Kitchen

Q: How long does it keep?
A: Once opened, I store it in the fridge and use it within 2–3 weeks. If the jar is sealed properly and unopened, it can last up to 2 months in the fridge or longer in the freezer.

Q: Can I freeze it?
A: Absolutely. Just leave some space at the top of the jar for expansion, and it will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Q: What if my jam is too runny?
A: Keep cooking it a bit longer to reduce the liquid, or add more apple to help it thicken naturally.

Q: Can I swap fruits?
A: Yes! You can use tangerines, blood oranges, or even grapefruit. Swap the carrot for pumpkin or sweet potato for a different flavor.

Why You Should Try This Jam

This homemade Orange and Carrot Jam is everything I want in a spread—naturally sweet, full of real flavor, and free from refined sugar. It’s a great way to use up extra fruit and sneak some veggies into your day. And the best part? You can feel good about spreading it thick.

So the next time you’re craving something sweet but don’t want the sugar overload, give this jam a try. Once you do, I’m pretty sure you’ll never look at store-bought jam the same way again.
